Yurlmun: Mokare Mia Boodja (Returning to Mokare’s Home Country) was an exhibition displayed at the Museum of the Great Southern, Albany, that centred upon significant objects that originated from the Menang Nyoongar people, of Western Australia’s Albany area. These objects were traded or gifted to Europeans in the 1800s and are now held by the British Museum.
Yurlmun: Mokare Mia Boodja sought to reconnect the Menang community with the objects, facilitating interpretation, community engagement, personal response and the sharing of cultural knowledge. It was the first time that the British Museum has worked with a museum and community in Australia to lend a full collection back to its place of origin.

Custom high security showcases were custom designed and constructed to house the objects. The showcases feature an etched wood grain pattern to reference the wooden objects with topography of the Albany area intwined within.
The objects had been stored within the British Museum’s collections since the 1830’s. For the first time, they returned to Menang Country.
The exhibition was designed with a clean, minimalist aesthetic to highlight the intricate and expertly made dark wood objects on display.
